Around Grant’s Farm

At first, I was flabbergasted to find the site of the Joseph Sappington House to be an empty lot, but some quick Google research led me to discover that the log cabin has been disassembled and is going to be (has already been?) moved to a new location next to the Thomas Sappington House. I’ll hit both in the future when they’re reunited.

I moved along to view another historic house near Grant’ Farm, which is the William Long Log Cabin, which is next to impossible to photograph since it is along Pardee Road with no shoulders, and no place to stop and take a picture. These will have to do! It was constructed in 1820, making it easily one of the oldest inhabited structures in the region.

The house below was also on land owned by the Sappingtons, and it was owned by a Frenchman named Maurice Allibe dit Arban. Now, “dit” simply means “called” in French, and I’ve seen many French Americans with that in their name. A lot of the time they had nicknames or other weird legal reasons for that. It is an interesting example of the Carpenter Gothic with board and batten siding. It was receiving a new roof when I went by; you can actually see the roofers at work in this photo.
